Psychotronics

Psychotronics is term for the study and understanding of the preturnatural phenomena around the variety of seemingly mental-controlled powers. Users are known by a variety of names and subnames, while Psion is the most common word, other terms in usage usage include Esper, Mentalist and Clairvoyant, Psychonaut, Async, Seer, and Remote Viewer. The Kemzali, often considered the premier Psions, use the term Kemsaa, or "Dreamer" as their preferred term.

Functionality

Psychotronics are often considered by laymen to be a form of mental power with little limitations, remote control of objects, people or mental manipulations that seem to come from nowhere. The truth is far more limited. Energy, even psionic, is not a zero-sum-game and causes severe strain on the user equal to the force exhibited.

Law of Exchange

The fundamental rule of psychotronics is there is an equal exchange of energy. There are is no free energy gained from psionic manipulation and in most physical-interaction cases, the energy expended is often greater than if musculature, designed at a fundamental level to turn biological resources into power, was used. As such, while a psion could psychically pick up a ball next to them, levitate it, and throw it at 40-60 miles an hour, it would apply a similar force it would to the musculature of the individual. Transferred throughout the nervous-system of the individual and generating an amount of psychic heat equal to to energy applied. Similarly, if energy is expelled, the energy is burned from the users own body.

Physical Limiters

Due to this fundamental law, psychotronic applications are limited in both range, effect, and power. While a psion is capable, in theory, of exhibiting immense force and effecting energy in an incredible way, energy must be expended, and stress must be applied to the body. If a ray of electrical energy is expelled, an human could never expel the potency of a lightning bolt at 1-4 billion joules. As the human body has about a million joules of energy within it. But the effect of a non-lethal electrical discharge could be produced, such as a cattleprod or a taser. Though the expenditure of energy increases dramatically as range increases as energy is wasted through travel. Simply put, any psychotronic application of a force, direct or indirect expends a great deal of stress on the body, burns through its energy reserves, and strains the mind and body and is limited by the body's own capacity to deal with these stressors.

Mental Limiters

While all psychotronic phenomena causes great mental strain, a greater strain is applied to purely mental arts such as precognition, telempathy, psychonautics, telepathy and hypercognition. Less clear is the application of the Law of Exchange on this mental strain. The simplest is the rapid burning through glucose reserves at an exponential rate compared to a brain not engaged in psychic activity. But the greater limiting factor is what is called simply Clarity. Commonly referred to as clarity. Clarity is the capacity for the Psion to trust their own perception, reality and place. The more one reaches out, consciously or unconsciously, the less clear your own identity, place, or even perception is. To a point where there is no capacity to consciously utilize or understand the Psychotronic abilities you possess, or even your own self.

Psychotronic Destruction

The end result of violating these limits is clear for a physical, an overstressed individual could burn too many calories to live, dying of starvation as they boil their brain--and body, alive, or who burned through their bodies glucose reserves and suffered brain death. For the mental, recovery is possible, but often results in a total loss of self. Subjects who've experienced mental psychotronic destruction is varied. Some become unable to manifest a true willpower, adhering to whatever reality is communicated to them at the time. Others lose all semblance of their former personality. More commonly, they completely lose the ability to distinguish reality and fiction. In all cases, destruction is considered a form of death that requires considerable medical aid to return the individual, if it is possible, to restore to functionality.

Methodologies an Origins

For most species, Psychotronic application is not natural, it requires a biological and technological adaptation and significant training to utilize. For some rare few species, it is a natural part of their biology. The only widely known Psionic species are the Kemzali, which over their extremely long lifespans will naturally grow their psychotronic abilities. Another species noted for psychotronic potential is the instectoid Civago, which exhibit some psionic capacity naturally. Finally the kobari are as a rule, mildly psionic, do have very, very rare individuals, usually of the Priest caste, have displayed abilities to actually develop these powers outside their natural harmony within their society.

Psionic Amps and Sinks

For most people, it is not a natural organ that gives them access to Psychotronic potential, its a Psi-Amp. Developed from the technological base of the United families. They are a physical device, sometimes held, worn or more commonly installed into the body enable psychotronic potential. This potential must then be trained and honed, the device must be tuned to the user by a qualified professional, and the body needs in some cases, adaptations or 'heat sinks' to prevent exhaustion. Some species with very good heat-regulation can get by without, but others often wear cooling equipment, or even installed cybernetic or bio-organic heat-venting modifications.

The exact design of heat-sinks and amps differs. Those manufactured by the United families tend to be biological in nature and require symbiotic integration into a host, but are essentially artificially created Huthwo's organs while the more common, less expensive, and more widely available versions tend to be mechanical devices in a variety of forms.

Evolution

The kemzali and kobari both possess a Huthwo's Organ, a form of naturally occurring, psionic amp near their sinuses, running along the length of their snout and forehead. While fully developed in kemzali, even psionically capable kobari have significantly diminished organs. Kemzali's method of regulating excess heat from the Law of Exchange involves unhinging their large mouth to expel heat, and actively bristling their hollow-oil-laden hair to naturally maximize cooling-surface. A likely reason why kemzali tend to chafe at wearing clothing they cannot quickly shed. It is unclear how the psionic potential of the kemzali evolved, and as the legal statement of the United families is they did not evolve and manifested as raw psionic will, research has been limited.

The other notable example is found in the Civago, which possess a less discrete organism that manifests as a portion of their brain directly connected to their sensory antenna which seems to act as both psi-amp and psi-heatsink both and who's evolution is thought, within their own studies, to be directly linked to the One Spirit of their spiritual belief system. External scientists consider it an adaptation that evolved from a peculiar reproductive pressure in the last millenium.

Finally, rare mutations have occurred that gift these rare individuals with natural psychotronic competency.
